Ring of Church Ladies Charged with Cruelty to Animals
Nephi (WRI) - Six women from the social organization Ladies of Cummorah for Warmth were charged with cruelty to animals
after authorities learned that the Pet Adoption Initiative that they were spearheading was a front for illegal
fur trade.
The website for the Pet Adoption Initiative claimed that the women, mostly affiliated with local faith-based charitable organizations, were brokering abandoned pets
as companions for the elderly, in an effort to "provide warmth and comfort, to those who might not otherwise have the luxury of a warm furry companion." What they neglected to state outright was that the adopted pets were
being used as fur for jackets, hats and gloves for the women in the canine collective.
Officials bristled at the description of the operation where 14 women were arrested for cruelty to animals. "Sure, it looked innocuous enough, you walked right into an area where the animals were kept and groomed obsessively, but once you got into the kitchen area, it was a regular butcher shop. The ladies alternated shifts between skinning, tanning, and sewing. No one was less culpable than anyone else."
While most of the women hung their heads as they were escorted past throngs of reporters en route to their preliminary hearing.
Priscilla Primula, 72, spat angrily at the crowds calling for "Cruel? Call me cruel? I'll tell you what's cruel -- I've had an Irish Setter jacket for 2 years now, and can't finding a
hat that does it any justice. I've tried Golden Retriever, Yellow Lab, I even tried a Bichon beret, but
nothing goes with it whatsoever. You've no idea. You're heartless! The whole lot of you!"
